Alzheimer's disease
On the back of this design, a PET-scan of a patient with Alzheimer's disease displayed.
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that leads to the shrinkage (atrophy) of the brain and the death of brain cells. It is the most common cause of dementia, a continuous decline in thinking, behavioral, and social skills that disrupts a person’s ability to function independently. The early signs of Alzheimer’s include forgetfulness, confusion with time or place, and difficulties in completing familiar tasks.
A PET scan plays a crucial role in the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, because they can detect amyloid plaques in the brain, which are one of the hallmarks of the disease. These plaques are sticky buildups which accumulate outside nerve cells and can disrupt function. Additionally, PET scans can assess how the brain is functioning by showing the areas where glucose is being used the most, indicating active brain function. This information can help in understanding the disease’s progression and evaluating how effectively a treatment is working.
